New York City is considered one of the most energy efficient cities in the US due to its dense population and the low dependence on personal cars. The whole City accounts for only 1% of the US greenhouse gas emissions while housing 2.7% of the country's population. As New Yorkers we can boast that we on average consume half the energy as used by San Francisco residents and one quarter that of what is used by residents of Dallas. With that being said, on the flip side, New York was voted #1 on "America's Dirtiest Cities" by Travel & Leisure when it looked at 35 of the US's favorite cities. Actions at government and administrative levels have increasingly worked towards that which is "green" and "sustainable." But for a more "green," more "sustainable" and more clean city, more needs to happen at the local and individual level. I am not trying to convince people to dramatically change their lives. But, there are small things each person can do to lessen their personal effect on their local environment. And a little bit from a lot of people can do more than you may think. I am looking around at what is available anyhow, so why not share it.
